Provence France
One of the most scenic and popular vacation destinations in France is the lovely Provence region. Located in the western area of the country, this spectacular place has an undeniable element of magic and elegance. Driving through the country here is sure to evoke visions of famous French paintings, and relaxing in the sunshine in the country or strolling in one of the regions beautiful towns will create memories not soon forgotten.
Medieval Avignon is one of the most interesting cities in the Provence region. This was home to the Popes in the 14th century instead of Rome, and they left a legacy behind of some of the most exquisite religious monuments and buildings in the country. This walled city of 100 000 people is full of colorful culture, and if you can time it right, visiting during the wonderful Festival d'Avignon is a great experience: this three-week celebration features fantastic art, theatre and music performances.
Arles is often described as the 'Soul of Provence', and its not wonder: this town is packed with artists, musicians, archaeologists and historians who relish in this amazing ancient city. This town was also the subject of many of Vincent Van Gogh's celebrated paintings, as the painter became entranced by Arles during the 1880's. If you plan on spending some time in Arles, be sure to make time to visit the museums and first-rate restaurants.
Finally there is the charming Aix-en-Provence. This city is home to about 150, 000 residents who are immensely proud of their historical and well established hometown. Aix-en-Provence has a rich history, which includes time as a military outpost, a civilian capital, and the seat of the archbishop. The city has also been immortalized on canvas by its most celebrated son, painter Paul Cezanne.
